📍 Bilbao in a day: The essential route through the city
At Academia Unilang Santander, we cross over to the neighbouring province to show you how to make the most of a visit to Bilbao. We know that it is a city with a lot to offer, which is why we have designed this strategic itinerary so that you don't miss a thing.
🌅 Morning: The soul of the Old Town
The day begins by immersing yourself in the history and flavour of Bilbao's roots.
🥐 Breakfast of champions
You can't say you've been to Bilbao without trying a butter bun. We recommend three iconic stops:
Don Manuel
El Tilo de Mami Lou
Basquery
⛪ History on the banks of the estuary
After refuelling, visit the Church of San Antón. It is the oldest in the city and, together with its namesake bridge, offers one of the most famous views of Bilbao. From there, enter the historic heart of the city via Bidebarrieta Street to admire its majestic library.
👣 The ‘Seven Streets’ (Zazpi Kaleak)
Stroll through the place where the city was born. Take your time as you walk along:
Somera, Artecalle, Tendería, Belosticalle, Carnicería Vieja, Barrenkale and Barrenkale Barrena.
Cross the Ribera Bridge towards ‘Old Bilbao’ to see the contrast between the old and the bohemian. Don't forget to visit:
The Medieval Wall on Calle Ronda.
Plaza Miguel de Unamuno (and its famous Calzada de Mallona).
Plaza Nueva: the perfect place to take a break and enjoy the best pintxos in the area.
🌇 In the afternoon: Avant-garde and Gran Vía
After indulging in the local cuisine, it's time to see the more modern and cosmopolitan side of Bilbao.
🎭 From Arriaga to Guggenheim
Admire the neo-baroque façade of the Arriaga Theatre and begin a walk along the banks of the Nervión River. Cross Calatrava's Zubizuri Bridge until you reach the imposing Guggenheim Museum.
A must: Say hello to Puppy, Jeff Koons' famous flower dog that guards the museum.
Tip: If you have time, go inside to see the exhibitions; the interior architecture is as fascinating as the exterior.
🏙️ The commercial heart and the ‘Fosteritos’
Walk up Alameda Mazarredo towards Gran Vía. Here you will see the economic and institutional power of the city:
Palacio Foral: Headquarters of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia.
Plaza Moyúa: The central hub where the most elegant buildings converge.
The Fosteritos: Take a look at the underground entrances designed by Norman Foster; they are a symbol of the city's industrial design.
